Genesis 1:2

Taking a look at the second verse of the Bible..

Genesis 1:2: Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Well, how do we take this verse? Verses 9-10 describe the split of the water and the land, so we know that the earth existed in a different mold than it does now. Do you know some of the controversy behind this verse?

Some people believed that there were two times of Creation. Why is this? This is where so-called Christians try to jam in evolutionary theories to meld with their small views of God. Those who believe evolution over the Bible say that there are millions of years between 1:1 and 1:2.

The theory claims that God created the Heavens and the earth in 1:1, possibly like it is now or maybe different. I guess we have no way to know? The Bible doesn't talk about a gap so we're left to decide for ourselves what this so-called world looked like. Where can they possibly get this? They take this from the word "hyth", a Hebrew word that means "was". They take this to mean "became". This is clearly a mistranslation, but we'll get back to that.

So what do they say happened in this Gap? Satan and his army of angels warred against God and his army of angels, and because of the War, the world became without form and void. At the beginning, God created the world. Then Satan fell in this time period, then millions of years passed and pre-Adamic humans existed, then were killed. (Remember that you die when you are killed.) Then the world became without form and void.

Let's look at why this is obviously untrue:
1. The Hebrew word "hyth" meant was in a past tense. The Hebrews only used two tenses: past and present. They believed that, in relation to humans, all actions were either done or were happening at that time. Since men could not determine their future, they did not use the future tense. The future tense was saved for God's actions.
2. The Hebrew word for the conjunction at the beginning of the verse is "waw". The word denotes a continuous move from verses 1 to 2. Some take this to mean a jump from the first Creation to the second. The word is contemporaneous, meaning that it joins 1 and 2 with each other at the same time.
3. Genesis 1:31 states that God saw His creation and declared it to be "very good". Would He declare His creation good if death had already touched it?
4. Romans 5 tells us (not that it's not found in Genesis), but Romans 5 tells us that death came into the world by Adam. Did these pre-Adamic man actually die before death came into the world?
5. In a purely logical standpoint, why didn't the Bible record the first fall? This seems like important information. There are things that the Bible has us take by faith, but I can't imagine that this would be one of them.

It's true, but some Christians, pastors and churches denounce the Creation story as it is written in Genesis and try to make Christianity work with the theory of evolution. Or, more likely, they try and make it work with the so-called "geological" ages that perpetuate the thought that the world has existed for millions of years.

Genesis 1-12 is part of the Bible and is part of historical fact. No if, and or but about it!

  2. When writing these types of posts, I do operate on the basis that the Bible is true.

I do actually believe this in real life, too. I believe that there is proof for Creationism and for a God. Answers in Genesis is a very cool website full of proof towards the existence of a Creator God if you have extra reading time sometime.

  3. But aren't there tons on contradictions in the Bible? I have trouble making my whole life based on a book that can't be proven. Have you ever stopped to think what your life would be like if you didn't follow some mystical book?

  4. I'd love to hear which contradictions are holding you back - I know that there are things that can trip people up. I know that a lot of things seem hard to understand or contradictory if you don't know the context. If you would like, feel free to post them here OR you can e-mail me at wermydude12 @ hotmail .com and we could discuss them. (Obviously no spaces, I just want don't want spambots attacking my inbox ;D)

I have thought about what my life would be like without God, and it's not a fun sight. It's actually a very scary, dark, disturbing thought. A life without following the Bible would be just depressing, hopeless and without anything to live for. Without Christ, I don't know what you could live for? But I'd love to discuss this with you.

  5. Well here is a measly 439 contradictions in the Bible. Doesn't seem too trustworthy to me... www.thealmightyguru.com/Atheism/Images/BibleContradictions-ReasonProject.png

  6. Oh buddy, that will be quite the list. Do you get e-mails when I respond or post?

    1. 2 Samuel 23:8: This is the listing of David's top men. Josheb-Basshebeth, the Tahkemonite. He was chief of the Three. He once put his spear to work against eight hundred—killed them all in a day.

I Chronicles 11:11 [...]Jashobeam son of Hacmoni was chief of the Thirty. Singlehandedly he killed three hundred men, killed them all in one skirmish.

These two verses look at two different people - the chief of the three Mighty Men and the chief of the 30.

    2. Read for context: James 2:21

    The Message (MSG)

21-24Wasn't our ancestor Abraham "made right with God by works" when he placed his son Isaac on the sacrificial altar? Isn't it obvious that faith and works are yoked partners, that faith expresses itself in works? That the works are "works of faith"? The full meaning of "believe" in the Scripture sentence, "Abraham believed God and was set right with God," includes his action. It's that mesh of believing and acting that got Abraham named "God's friend." Is it not evident that a person is made right with God not by a barren faith but by faith fruitful in works?

    3. I'll have to do more research into this one.

    4. Another one I'll have to do more research into.

Obviously this list is quite long and I can't possibly do ALL of these today - give me some time and I'll try and periodically answer these questions and let you know my thoughts.

  7. 421. I don't understand where they think the contradiction lies?

    375. The Psalmist asks God when He will reply to trouble. The Psalms are a collection of poetry - not always theological truths. The Psalmist, being human thinks that God is ignoring them in their times of trouble. The point of Psalms is to show how emotion and God can co-exist, and that humans don't have a full range of a view on God. It's not a contradiction - it's a human's view of God's treatment of them.

  8. 312. God's law is perfect - a reading of Romans and Hebrews in their entirety will show you that. Not that the law was imperfect. To perfectly follow the law would be to perfectly live in harmony with man and God. The reason that the old law needed to be replaced was that humans, due to our sin nature, could not possibly follow it to the fullest and most perfect way. When Jesus Christ died, we died too, and now He (The Spirit) lives in us. Because He lives in us, we can follow the Law even better than we had before His sacrifice. Because Christ did not come to destroy the Law, but to fulfill it.

  9. No, I don't get an email, but I've been checking back to see if you respond. Dude, are you seriously going to try and go through every one of those to prove that the Bible is right? That's pretty hard-core crazy.

  10. haha I'd like to go thru all of them! Some seem like theology questions rather than contradictions - those I think I can handle. The others I just need to research. We'll see what I (and some help, and God) can do!

  11. Switchfreak - there are a lot of questions that are due to theological ignorance or stuff I do not quite know. Do you have any personal questions??

  12. Not really, I mean, your obvious belief and love for this stuff brought me to my knees last night. I decided that I needed to accept God's gift of salvation, so I did, and now I'm going to find the answers to those so-called contradictions myself. thanks for everything!

  13. Luke 15:10 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

I'm SO happy to hear that! But remember, you don't have to just take this for my word - the Bible has the answers. Get in touch with me with my e-mail above or @ChrisWerms on Twitter. I'd love to help you find answers too.
