Casting your Cares

My charge to stop posting Scripture verses by themselves.

I Peter 5:5-7:
Likewise, you younger men, be subject to the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, because He cares about you.

How many times have you seen I Peter 5:7 posted by itself? Plenty? Sure, I have. Am I saying that's wrong? No, not at all! I'm just saying, be careful that you don't take a verse outside of its context. But notice what happens when you post 1 Peter 5:7: "Cast all your cares upon Him, because He cares for you."

Did you notice what happened? You changed the verb tense of the "casting". Doesn't that seem like a big deal to you? Verse 5 says that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. How do you humble yourselves and receive this grace? By "casting all of your cares upon Him". Isn't that cool? These verses are saying SO MUCH more than stating your ability to cast upon Him - they're actually saying that He cares about you enough that you have the ability to, and by doing so, you can receive His grace!

The act of receiving help is humble. You can't ask for help with a prideful spirit. By casting your cares upon Him who cares about you, you become more humble and you receive God's grace. How cool. And how cool to see how much context can add to a verse.
