Messages from Titus

In this post, I read through the book of Titus and see the charges put forth for Christians.


Charges for Elders:
1: 6-9

  • Must be blameless
  • Faithful to his wife
  • Children must believe
  • Not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient
  • Blameless
  • Not overbearing
  • Not quick-tempered
  • Not given to drunkenness
  • Not violent
  • Not pursuing violent gain
  • He must be hospitable
  • Loves what is good
  • Self-controlled
  • Upright
  • Holy
  • Honest
  • Hold firmly to the trustworthy message
  • Encourage others with sound doctrine
  • Refute those who oppose it
To those rebuking those in opposition:
(This one is a little harder to categorize, but there are definite commands given in this passage)
1:11, 13-14
  • Silence them
  • Refute them sharply
  • Pay no attention to Jewish myths or purely human commands
To the older men:
2:2
  • Be temperate
  • Be worthy of respect
  • self-controlled
  • Sound in faith, love and in endurace
To the older women:
2:3-5
  • Reverent in the way that they live
  • Not slanderers
  • Not addicted to much wine
  • Able to teach what is good
  • Encourage young women to love their husbands and children, be self-controlled, pure, homemakers, kind and submissive to their husbands
To young men:
2:6-8
  • Self-controlled in everything
  • An example with good works and integrity in teaching
  • Message should be beyond reproach

To slaves:
2:9-10
  • Submissive to their masters in everything
  • Well-pleasing
  • Not talking back
  • Not stealing
  • Demonstrate utter faithfulness

For all people:
2:12-13, 15
  • Deny godlessness and worldly lusts
  • live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age
  • Wait for the hope and appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ
  • Say these things
  • Encourage
  • Rebuke with all authority
  • Encourage
For Christians living amongst outsiders:
3:1-2, 8-9, 14
  • Be submissive to rulers and authorities
  • Obey
  • Be ready for every good work
  • Slander no one
  • Avoid fighting
  • Be kind
  • Always show gentleness to people
  • Insist on these things
  • Avoid foolish debates, genealogies, quarrels and disputes about the law
  • Reject a divisive person after their first and second warning
  • Devote yourselves to good works for cases of urgent need
